It covers an area of 148 km2 and lies at the crossroads of important traffic routes leading from northern Europe to the Adriatic and from western Europe to the east. The town developed on a natural pier at the confluence of the 30-meters-deep incised riverbeds of the Kokra and Sava, a river crossing at the intersection of the longitudinal path along the Sava and transverse paths towards Jezersko and Ljubelj and Škofja Loka.
