About Kranj's smart solutions in London, Warsaw and Tallinn
In March, the City of Kranj has accepted invitations to two major international events the Data Spaces Symposium in Warsaw and the Smart City Exchange Forum in Tallinn. In London at the world's biggest event for innovation in public transport, the CeKR city card was among the finalists.
The Data Spaces Symposium 2025 took place on March 11–12 at the Hilton Warsaw City, bringing together global experts, policymakers, and industry leaders to shape the future of the data economy. Organized by the Data Spaces Support Centre (DSSC) and the Data Spaces Business Alliance (DSBA), the event focused on sovereign, interoperable, and trustworthy data-sharing as a key driver of business transformation.
The symposium featured keynotes, hands-on demonstrations, and real-world pilot projects, emphasizing the role of data spaces in tackling local challenges and improving citizen services.
One of the highlights was the panel on the EU data space for smart communities, which explored the federation approach and pilot initiatives. Among the distinguished panelists was Tomaž Lanišek, Head of the Office for Development and Smart City in City of kranj (CoK). He presented the UrbanMind pilot project, showcasing innovative solutions for urban development.
City design using data, artificial intelligence and smart governance
A day later, Tomaž Lanišek attended the Smart City Exchange Forum 2025 in Tallinn, Estonia, where he was invited by the organisers due to Kranj's projects City Digital Platform Smart Kranj, UrbanMind and the CeKR City Card.
The event brought together a number of city leaders, researchers and technology experts. The focus of many discussions was on how data, AI and smart governance can transform urban environments and how legislation can foster innovation...
Lanišek presented the city's experience in developing the above-mentioned projects in the debate Regulatory Sandbox and the Real World–Is a Win-Win Situation Possible? The panellists – renowned experts in the field of public policy, innovation and digital transformation (Tallinn University of Technology, Accelerate Estonia, Digital Nation ...) – analysed how regulatory sandboxes, effective governance and stakeholder engagement can help to resolve conflicting interests and what benefits they could bring to cities or countries.
City card CeKR finalist on Transport Ticketing Global 2025
London once again played host to the Transport Ticketing Global event, gathering smart ticketing and mobility experts from 65 countries. The event provided a platform for leading transport operators, authorities, and technology providers to explore the latest industry advancements, share insights, and showcase cutting-edge solutions at around 100 stand exhibition.
A highlight of the event was the 14th annual Transport Ticketing Awards, where 250 ticketing professionals came together at the Gala Dinner & Awards Ceremony to celebrate achievements in the industry. This year’s awards saw a record number of entries, reflecting the continued innovation in ticketing technologies worldwide.
In the Best Equity and Inclusion Initiative category, the vision for the CeKR city card was among the finalists, competing against projects that aim to improve accessibility in transport; mainly because of the principle of fair pricing and because of the benefits it provides, which will motivate users to use public passenger transport and to act sustainably.
The top honor in this category was awarded to the Ukrainian Ticketing Scheme, recognizing its outstanding contribution to inclusive ticketing solutions.
