Kranj's climate contract successfully in Brussels

We were the first municipality in Slovenia (Ljubljana and Velenje were also selected for the Mission) to officially submit a Climate City Contract to the European Commission two days before the deadline, on Wednesday 13 March 2024.

Kranj, which was selected by the European Commission in 2022 for the Mission 100 Climate Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030, completed the preparation of its Climate City Contract (CCC) after a year of intensive work and submitted it to the European Commission for official review on 13 March 2024. It is a hefty pile of documents with an action and investment plan and 38 neutrality commitments from different stakeholders and partners on how Kranj intends to achieve becoming a climate neutral and smart city by 2030.

In January, we were the first in Slovenia to submit the documents to the NetZeroCities consortium for an informal review and received a positive opinion that they are well prepared and the plan is achievable. Now comes the formal review of the documents, followed in the autumn by the awarding of the Mission Label to those cities in the Mission whose climate contract will be approved by the European Commission after a thorough examination.

We believe that Kranj will be one of them, as we have been actively working for energy saving and environmental preservation for many years, and now we are going to consolidate this even further with the additional measures we have set out. This is a set of measures in five key areas: energy, mobility and transport, waste management and the circular economy, green and blue infrastructure and the built environment (buildings).

Achieving the objectives will require a lot of cooperation and networking at all levels – with citizens, businesses, industry, tourism, etc. – because only together can we make a difference for the better.
